Project: Sea turtles in Greece

GS06ZSGR

www.globalspirit.nlSea turtles are reptiles that have totally adapted to sea life. Like all reptiles, they have lungs, which means that they need to surface to the sea to breathe, their skin is covered in scales and they lay eggs. Although they spend most of their life at sea, they are dependent on land for their reproduction.

The Loggerhead (Caretta caretta), is one of the three species of sea turtle that can be found in the Mediterranean Sea and the only one that nests in Greece.

  • To raise public awareness, especially amongst schoolchildren and fishermen: activities include the exhibition area and providing information to visitors.
  • To operate a Sea Turtle Rescue Network throughout Greece: collection and transport of injured turtles. (If you possess a driving licence please do not neglect to bring it along).
  • Basic maintenance activities as well as cleaning of surroundings and living quarters.

If you would like to help in seasonal fieldwork (1st May-31Oct.), www.globalspirit.nl for example your tasks may be:

Nest Management and Habitat Protection:

  • Nest protection against human activities and predation.
  • Relocating nests which are in an unsafe area.
  • Collecting data on nesting females (by a select number of highly trained volunteers, during the night).

Public awareness:

  • Participation in the Information Stations, that operate at key points of the nesting sites.
  • Giving Slide Shows on sea turtle biology and conservation conducted on a regular basis in hotels and other facilities.
  • Beach Patrols, carried out during the day.
  • Safeguarding of the beaches at night in order to minimise the impact of tourism on the nesting activity.

Maintenance and Day-To-Day Duties:
