Project: Sea turtles in Greece

www.globalspirit.nlThe Loggerhead (Caretta caretta), is one of the three species of sea turtle that can be found in the Mediterranean Sea and the only one that nests in Greece.

The project

Volunteer work with sea turtles in Greece; The sea turtle project is an organization founded in 1994 with the aim to protect sea turtles and their habitats in Greece, as well as to raise awareness among the public about the dangers they face and lobby for the implementation of the measures needed for their protection in a short and long-term basis.

Period/duration

  • Volunteers are welcome in Athens all year around with a minimum stay of 4 weeks and maximum 12 weeks.
  • Volunteers are welcome on the island of Zakynthos, Crete and on Peloponnesus: from half May – end of September/half October.
  • You are free to choose your own arrival date.
  • Family volunteering (with children from 8 years old) June – end of August.
  • The duration of your stay must be 28 days (+1 day before arrival) or longer.
  • Volunteering with children minimum stay of 3 days and maximum 1 week.

  • Minimum age for participation is 18 and fors ome project also participants with children (8 jaar - 18 years old) are welcome (family volunteering).
  • Volunteers must be able to communicate in English.
  • Long term participation is highly appreciated.
  • There are no required vaccinations for this project but vaccinations for DTP and Hepatitis A are advised. (for additional vaccines and/or information we advise you to contact or visit your local clinic.).

Accommodation

www.globalspirit.nlIn Athens a basic accommodation is being offered in the Rehabilitation Centre in a train wagon which is exclusively reserved for this goal. You will share the basic sanitary and cooking facilities with other volunteers.

For fieldwork projects you will stay on campsites, reserved for the project volunteers only, with outdoor very basic sanitary and cooking facilities, which you will share with other volunteers. It is absolutely necessary to bring along your own camping gear like sleeping bag and tent.

The work

On arrival you will get an introduction. The work depends on where you will be placed by the project. If you would like to help in the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (all year round), for example your tasks may be:

  • To treat and rehabilitate injured, sick or weak sea turtles: preparation and administration of food, carrying and cleaning the animals, as well as cleaning the facilities and equipment, daily treatment of the animals as determined by the vets (administering medication, cleaning wounds) as well as taking biometric data and making behavior observations.
  • Activities include the exhibition area and providing information to visitors.
  • To operate a Sea Turtle Rescue Network throughout Greece: collection and transport of injured turtles. (If you possess a driving licence please do not neglect to bring it along).
  • Basic maintenance activities as well as cleaning of surroundings and living quarters.

If you would like to help in seasonal fieldwork (1st May-31Oct.), www.globalspirit.nl for example your tasks may be:

Nest Management and Habitat Protection:

Nesting season May – half August :

  • Morning surveys to look for adult turtle tracks and locate nests, 'caging', or relocating threatened nests.
  • Collecting data on nesting females (during the night and not alsways guearanteed).
  • Dealing with injured and death sea turtles

Hatching season half Juli – end of October:

  • Morning surveys to look for hatchling (baby turtle) tracks and locate nests, marking of hatching nests, dealing with any hatchlings that are still on the beach.
  • Shading of the nests to protect the hatchlings from disorientation due to light pollution.
  • Excavations of hatched nests to determine the hatching success.
  • Dealing with injured or dead turtles.

Public awareness:

  • Participation in the Information Stations, that operate at key points of the nesting sites.
  • Giving Slide Shows on sea turtle biology and conservation conducted on a regular basis in hotels and other facilities.
  • Beach Patrols, carried out during the day.
  • Safeguarding of the beaches at night in order to minimise the impact of tourism on the nesting activity.

Maintenance and Day-To-Day Duties:

  • Basis maintenance of equipment including activities such as painting and carpentry.
  • Artistic skills including drawing and photography are utilised if possible.

You will work 7 days a week (about 8 hours a day) and are entitled to 3 days off during a 28 day period.

The project is situated on different areas:

In Athens: Athens is the capital of Greece and is situated on the eastern part of the mainland. It’s also known as the city of antiquity.

www.globalspirit.nlOn the island of Zakynthos: Zakynthos is the most southern and third largest in both size and population of the Ionian Islands.

In the Peloponnesus: The Peloponnesus is the most southern part of the mainland of Greece. Originally it was an island.

On the island of Crete: Crete is the largest and most famous Greek island, which separates the Aegean sea from the Libyan sea and forms the border between Europe and Africa.

De project staff

www.globalspirit.nl Each project has a coordinator who is assisted by seasonal personnel (field leaders). Field leaders and other experienced members of the project are responsible for allocating duties, training and supervising volunteers. The Official language of communication on the project site is English. Knowledge of other languages like German can also prove to be very useful for public awareness purposes.
