Project: Adriatic dolphins in Croatiaë

The bottlenose dolphin is the only cetacean regularly found in the Adriatic sea. The bottlenose dolphin is one of the largest dolphins growing up to 3,5 m in this region.

The project

Volunteer work with dolphins in Croatia; This project is one of the projects organized by a Croatia Non Governmental Organization, formed to carry out scientific research, conservation and awareness of the marine environment with particular emphasis on the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas.

www.globalspirit.nlThe project is a long-term study on ecology and conservation of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the area surrounding the Cres and Lošinj islands. The aim of the project is to provide an overall picture of the population status and dynamics of the bottlenose dolphins . The research focuses on dolphin population dynamics, feeding ecology, and the impact of human activity. Collected data are used to produce a regular report on the status and ecology of the bottlenose dolphin population and to offer a solution for their effective conservation.

The work

The work varies and for example your tasks may be:

  • If the sea is calm and the weather is fine, you may come on board the boat to search for dolphins. Sometimes the dolphins are located within a few minutes, however it could take several hours;
  • When a group of dolphins is located, everyone on board will be assigned a specific task, which for example may be recording data: for example the time, the number of breakdowns of the dolphins. Also the dolphins behavioral activity will be studied ;
  • In some cases the boat will be stopped and you may be asked to be involved in acoustic sampling by placing the hydrophone in the water and in order to capture the noise pollution the dolphins make. This information can be used as a insight into the dolphins behavior under water;
  • If the sea is not calm, you will remain at the base, helping with analyzing data and preparing scientific papers;
  • A daily lecture is offered on aspects of cetacean biology, the marine environment or the research procedures;
  • Helping the staff and students by taking visitors around the educational centre and explaining the exhibition;
  • You will also be required to help in everyday tasks such as the preparation of meals and field base maintenance.

Project location

www.globalspirit.nlThe field base is situated in the old village on the east coast of the island of Lošinj Croatia. The coastline is extremely divers and consist of many different bays and underwater caves. In the centre there is a small harbor. The marine in this environment is the cleanest part of the Northern Adriatic sea, with underwater visibility of consistently over 20 meters. Snorkeling and diving in this clear water is defiantly one of the possibilities. It is possible to undertake other excursions for example visiting surrounding villages with their many sightseeing’s.

Travel information

You will be responsible for arranging your own transport to the project in Croatia. Detailed travel information will be given after you’ve booked for the project.

www.globalspirit.nlThe project consists of an international research team with different researchers and students of biology or ecology. It’s an enthusiastic team which will be delighted to answer all your questions and will supervise you with pleasure during your stay. The language spoken at this project is English.
